ArticlesCancer Fighting FoodsBy Brock Smith, R.Ph. Are you or someone you know interested in reducing your risk of common cancers? Help may be as close as your nearest farmers market. Many studies have shown that fruits and vegetables help lower your risks of cancers. A diet high in fiber and low in fat that includes plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables is your best way to wage war against cancer. The USDA recommends you eat more than 5 servings of fruits and vegetables and 6-11 servings of grains. You should also limit the amount of meat you eat, especially those high in fat. A high fat diet may lead to increases in cancers of the colon, rectum, prostate and endometrium. Saturated fats may increase risk of cancer as well as heart disease. To understand how foods fight cancer it is necessary that we know the words that are used to discuss the agents that cause cancer and the food substances that tend to destroy or hinder their growth. One buzz word, carcinogen, is a substance that tends to produce cancer. Another is phytochemical, which is a chemical compound created by plants. Phytochemicals strengthen the body’s immune system and function as antioxidents to flush out free radicals. Some phytochemicals prevent the formation of carcinogens, others keep cells that have been exposed to carcinogens from becoming malignant.
(Source: Ebony, Jan. 1998) In conclusion, a few changes in your diet will be the easiest way to help prevent cancer. Eat more yellow, orange, green leafy vegetables and more beans. Eat less grilled meats. Also, watch your weight and make regular exercise a priority in your life.
