It is estimated that approximately 20 million Americans have a thyroid disorder which means 1 in every 10 people. Hypothyroidism is caused from decreased production of thyroid hormone which results in decreased metabolism6. Hypothyroidism occurs more commonly in women 1.2-2% as compared to men 0.2 %. Hypothyroidism is also more common in menopausal women.
The abrupt cessation of a branch of the Women's Health Initiative Randomized Controlled Trial (WHI) (a study funded by the NIH, National Institute of Health) caused a media frenzy and raised concerns regarding Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) by both the professional and lay community.
Tamoxifen, marketed as Nolvadex®, is a nonsteroidal antiestrogen that has been used for the treatment of breast cancer since the early 1970s, successfully helping save the lives of millions of women with breast cancer. Interestingly, Nolvadex was initially developed as a possible contraceptive when it was discovered that it prevented implantation in rats suggesting antiestrogenic effects.
Menopause for Men? Most do not realize that men experience a change in their hormonal production and balance that in many ways is very similar to menopause. It is called andropause. In fact, andropause is often referred to as "male menopause". Some of the signs of andropause include: inability to concentrate, mood swings, weakness, irritability, loss of memory, decreased energy, depression, loss of libido (sex drive), decreased erectile function, decreased strength of orgasm, decreased muscle mass and increased fat.
